Understanding solar energy savings and how they work

Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity, which can then be used to power your home. During peak sunlight, your solar system generates more electricity than you might need. Without solar battery storage, this excess energy is typically fed back into the grid, and you may receive a small feed-in tariff.

However, this excess energy is stored for later use with a solar battery system, maximising your solar energy savings.

How solar energy helps reduce electricity bills

1. Generating free power from the sun

Solar panels generate electricity from sunlight, allowing households to power their homes with free, renewable energy. During daylight hours, solar panels can significantly reduce reliance on grid electricity, leading to substantial solar energy savings.

2. Net metering and feed-in tariffs

If a solar system produces more energy than needed, excess electricity can be fed back into the grid in exchange for credits through Australia’s feed-in tariff programs. This further reduces electricity costs and improves overall savings.

3. Reducing peak hour dependence

Electricity rates are typically higher during peak demand hours. With a well-designed solar system, households can use solar energy daily and store excess energy for later use, minimising reliance on expensive grid electricity.

The role of battery storage in energy savings

While solar panels help lower energy bills, adding battery storage takes savings to the next level by maximising self-sufficiency and reducing dependency on the grid.

1. Storing excess solar energy for later use

Solar battery storage allows businesses and homeowners to store unused solar energy generated during the day and use it at night or during cloudy periods. This ensures a continuous power supply and enhances solar energy savings.

2. Lowering peak demand charges

For households on time-of-use tariffs, battery storage helps avoid drawing power from the grid during peak pricing periods. Instead, stored solar energy is used, leading to significant cost reductions.

3. Providing backup power during outages

Battery storage systems also serve as a backup power source during blackouts. This added reliability ensures uninterrupted power supply while reducing long-term reliance on grid electricity.

Solar battery storage cost benefits: Is it worth the investment?

One of the most common concerns for businesses and homeowners is the upfront cost of solar battery systems. While the initial investment can be substantial, the solar battery storage cost benefits often outweigh the expenses in the long run.

Decreasing battery prices

The cost of solar batteries has steadily decreased due to technological advancements and increased market competition. Government incentives and rebates further enhance affordability.

Long-term savings

With rising electricity prices, battery storage helps businesses and homeowners lock in lower energy costs by storing and utilising their energy. Over time, these savings offset the initial investment, making it a cost-effective solution.

Government incentives and rebates

Several Australian states offer rebates and incentives for solar battery storage installations, reducing out-of-pocket expenses. Programs like the Small-Scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) and state-based solar battery incentives make solar-plus-storage systems more accessible.

Why go custom?

A generic, one-size-fits-all solar system might seem convenient, but it must often maximise the potential benefits. Here’s why opting for a custom solar solution is the smarter choice:

  • Optimised energy production: A custom system considers roof size, orientation, shading patterns, and historical energy usage. This meticulous planning ensures the panels capture the most sunlight possible, leading to higher energy generation and reduced reliance on the grid.
  • Efficient system design: A custom approach takes into account your roof structure, available space, and potential future expansions. This ensures optimal panel placement and efficient wiring for seamless system integration.
  • Aesthetics matter: Solar panels in Australia can be an attractive addition to your property. Custom solutions allow panel layout and placement flexibility, ensuring a visually appealing design that complements your existing architecture.
  • Future-proofing: Your energy needs evolve over time. A custom system can be designed with scalability in mind, allowing for easy future expansion as your requirements grow.
  • Roof space and layout: Not all roofs are created equal. Your roof’s size, shape, and orientation significantly determine solar panel placement and overall system output. A custom design ensures panels are positioned for maximum sun exposure throughout the day.
  • Shading considerations: Trees, chimneys, or neighbouring structures can cast shadows on your roof, impacting power generation. A custom solar installer will account for shading patterns throughout the year, strategically placing panels to minimise its effect.
  • System type and technology: Various system configurations must be considered beyond the basic panels. A custom solution provider will explore options like battery storage for backup power or utilising solar hot water systems to further reduce reliance on conventional energy sources.
  • Budget and future plans: Solar panel systems are an investment, and customisation allows you to find a solution that fits your budget. You can choose a system that meets your current needs with the option to expand in the future as your energy demands evolve.
  • Reduced costs: By accurately matching your energy needs with system capacity, you avoid overspending on unnecessary panels or incurring charges for excess power generation.

The custom solar solution process

The journey to a perfectly tailored solar system typically involves these key steps:

  • Free consultation: Reputable solar companies offer a no-obligation consultation where a specialist assesses your property, understands your energy usage patterns, and discusses your goals.
  • Site assessment: In site assessment, the specialist will analyse your roof’s size, shape, orientation, and shading patterns. They will also assess the electrical infrastructure and identify the most suitable location for the inverter, which converts the DC power generated by the panels to usable AC power for your home.
  • Energy audit: Analysing your electricity bills helps estimate your daily and seasonal energy consumption. This data forms the basis for designing a system that meets your power needs.
  • System design and proposal: A custom solar system design is created based on the gathered information. This includes the number and type of panels, inverter capacity, and any additional equipment required. A detailed proposal outlining the system specifications, estimated energy production, financial benefits, and payback period is presented.
  • Approval and installation: Once you approve the proposal, the necessary permits are obtained, and the installation begins. Reputable companies use certified installers who adhere to strict safety standards and industry best practices.
  • Post-installation support: The journey doesn’t end with installation. Most companies offer ongoing support, including system monitoring, maintenance advice, and warranty services.

The benefits of solar power in Australia

Australia is one of the sunniest places on Earth, making it an ideal location for harnessing solar energy. Solar power offers several benefits:

Reduced electricity bills: Solar panels generate electricity from sunlight, reducing your reliance on grid electricity and lowering your electricity bills.

Environmentally friendly: Solar power is a clean and renewable energy source, helping reduce your carbon footprint and contributing to a more sustainable future.

Government incentives: The Australian government provides various incentives, such as Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) and feed-in tariffs, to encourage solar adoption.

Energy independence: Solar power allows you to generate electricity, reducing dependence on the grid and safeguarding against power outages.

The role of solar batteries

While solar panels generate electricity daily, excess energy is often returned to the grid or wasted. Solar batteries, also known as energy storage systems, store this surplus energy during the night or when the sun isn’t shining. They play a crucial role in maximising the benefits of solar power.

Determining whether a home solar battery is right for you

Assess your energy usage: Begin by evaluating your household’s energy consumption. Analyse your electricity bills to understand your energy consumption patterns and identify peak usage times.

Solar panel efficiency: Consider the efficiency and output of your existing solar panels. If you have older or less efficient panels, upgrading to newer ones could significantly impact your energy production.

Energy storage needs: Determine the excess energy your solar panels generate and whether it can meet your energy needs during cloudy days or at night. The larger your surplus energy, the more valuable a solar battery will be.

Battery cost: Solar batteries come with an upfront cost, varying depending on capacity and brand. Compare the cost of batteries against potential savings over the long term.

Feed-in tariffs: Check your local utility’s feed-in tariff rates. If the rate is low, it may be more cost-effective to store excess energy in a battery and use it when needed rather than selling it back to the grid.

Government incentives: Be aware of any current government incentives, grants, or subsidies that may help offset the cost of purchasing a solar battery.

Battery lifespan: Consider the expected lifespan of the solar battery. High-quality batteries can last for many years, ensuring a better return on your investment.

Installation and maintenance: Factor in the installation and maintenance costs. Ensure you have a reliable installer with a good track record.

Calculating potential savings

To determine whether a home solar battery will result in cost savings, you can perform a simple financial analysis. Calculate the following:

Battery cost: Calculate the upfront cost of the battery system, including installation.

Energy savings: Estimate the amount of energy you can store and use from the battery each day.

Electricity savings: Determine the reduction in your electricity bill due to using stored energy instead of drawing from the grid.

Payback period: Calculate how long it will take for the energy savings to offset the initial investment.

Return on Investment (ROI): Assess the overall return on your investment by comparing energy savings to the total cost of the system.

If your payback period is within 5-7 years, then a home battery is likely a good financial investment for you. However, if your payback period is longer than 7 years, then a battery may not be the right investment for you at this time.

Here are some additional factors to consider when deciding whether or not to purchase a home battery

  • Your electricity tariff: If you are on a time-of-use tariff, you can save more money with a home battery by using stored solar energy during peak periods when electricity prices are highest.
  • Government subsidies: The Australian government offers several subsidies for home batteries, which can help to reduce the upfront cost of the system.
  • VPP participation: If you participate in a virtual power plant (VPP), you can earn money by allowing your battery to be used to provide electricity to the grid at times of peak demand.
  • Blackout protection: Home batteries can provide backup power during a blackout. This can be a valuable feature if you live in an area that experiences frequent power outages.
  • Environmental benefits: Home batteries can help to reduce your reliance on fossil fuels and your carbon footprint.
  • Future plans: If you are considering switching to an electric vehicle in the future, a home battery can help you power your car and save money on fuel costs.
  • The cost of the battery: Home batteries can range in price from several thousand dollars to tens of thousands of dollars. The cost will vary depending on the size and capacity of the battery, as well as the brand and model.
  • The warranty on the battery: Most home batteries come with a warranty of 10-15 years. However, it’s important to read the warranty carefully to understand what is and is not covered.
  • The maintenance requirements of the battery: Most home batteries require very little maintenance. However, it’s important to have the battery inspected by a qualified technician regularly.

Overall, whether or not a home battery can save you money will depend on your circumstances. However, if you have a high electricity bill, a solar panel system, and a time-of-use tariff, then a home battery could be a worthwhile investment.

In Australia, installing a home solar battery should be based on a comprehensive analysis of your energy usage, panel efficiency, battery costs, government incentives, and potential savings. While solar batteries can result in significant cost savings over time, it’s essential to carefully evaluate your specific circumstances to determine whether they are a worthwhile investment for your family. With the right approach and conditions, home solar batteries can provide a sustainable and economically viable energy solution for Australian households in 2023 and beyond.

Why solar storage solutions matter for Australia

Australia’s solar boom has created both opportunities and challenges. One significant challenge is managing the energy generated by solar systems when demand doesn’t align with production. Solar panels generate the most power during the daytime when the sun is shining, but energy use often peaks in the evening after the sun has set. This mismatch between energy generation and demand is where solar storage solutions, particularly solar batteries, come into play.

Some benefits of solar battery storage

Batteries capture excess solar power generated during sunny periods and store it for later use, offering homeowners and businesses a range of benefits:

  • Balancing the grid: Solar batteries in Australia can store excess solar energy generated during the day and release it at night or when needed, helping to balance the grid and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
  • Reducing costs: Solar batteries can help reduce the need to upgrade infrastructure to cope with peak demand, saving consumers and businesses money.
  • Increasing reliability: Solar batteries can provide backup power during outages, improving the electricity supply’s reliability.
  • Enabling renewable energy: Solar batteries can enable renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power by storing their output and releasing it when needed.
  • Reduced greenhouse gas emissions: The battery will help to reduce reliance on fossil fuels for electricity generation. This will help the state meet its emissions reduction targets and contribute to the fight against climate change.
  • Job creation and economic benefits: The construction and operation of the battery will create jobs and boost the local economy.
  • Participation in Virtual Power Plants (VPPs): Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) are gaining traction in Australia. They allow households with solar batteries to aggregate their stored power and feed it back to the grid during high-demand periods. Participants in a VPP can earn incentives by selling excess power back to the grid, which benefits the broader community by enhancing grid stability.

Abundant sunlight and an emphasis on renewable energy make Australia a hotspot for solar power adoption. One in three homes across the nation have rooftop solar panels, harnessing the sun’s energy to power homes and reduce electricity bills.

As the world shifts toward a greener future, another technology has begun to capture many Aussies: solar batteries. These energy storage systems promise to revolutionise how we use solar energy, allowing households to store excess power for use during the night or during grid outages.

But there’s one lingering question on the minds of many: When will solar batteries become affordable in Australia?

Cost trends of solar batteries in Australia

The average price of home solar batteries is between $1,000 to $13,000 per kWh of capacity installed. However, the price varies depending on the brand, size and location.

In the early stages of solar battery technology, the cost was undeniably high. They were primarily the domain of early adopters and those with a solid commitment to reducing their carbon footprint. These early systems were expensive to purchase and install, which limited their accessibility to  many homeowners and businesses.

The good news is that the landscape has changed significantly in recent years with the cost of solar batteries steadily decreasing. Advances in battery technology have led to higher energy density, longer lifespan, and improved efficiency that help make solar batteries more cost-effective.

The demand for solar batteries also continues to grow, hence more manufacturers and suppliers have entered the market. As a result, it increased the competition that drives down prices, which makes solar batteries more affordable for consumers.

A solar panel owner can benefit more from solar battery ownership as the net benefit has increased from 0.15-0.20 $kWh in 2020 to an average of 0.24 $kWh in 2021. The trend is expected to continue as solar feed-in tariffs (FiTs) and export charges are introduced.

Insights on when prices will drop

Sunwiz has released its annual Australian Battery Market Report, which showed significant growth in residential battery energy storage systems (BESS). In 2021, Australia added 47,1000 installations, which brings the country’s cumulative total to 180,000 ESSEs since 2015.

Nearly all Australian states are added to this number except for South Australia (SA), which has approximately 7 per cent of the nation’s total 26 million residents as of September 2022.

This accounts for a surge in renewable energy that is causing a considerable drop in average prices with $83 per megawatt hours (MWh) in the first three months of 2023, according to Australia’s National Electricity Market (NEM).

This makes Australia one of the most attractive markets in the world for BESS technology, which paves the path for diverse revenue streams that drive the viability of BESS.

To gain better insights into when the prices of solar batteries will drop in the country, there are various factors to consider that influence the cost of solar batteries.

Advancements in technology

Manufacturers of solar batteries are continually researching and developing new materials and designs to boost the efficiency and lifespan of energy storage. As advancements in technology become more widespread, the cost of producing solar batteries is expected to decrease.

Manufacturing scale

As the demand for solar batteries increases in the country and globally, manufacturers can produce batteries in larger quantities, leading to lower production costs per unit. This is one of the trends that are already evident as more companies enter the market and expand their production capabilities.

Market competition

With the growing interest in solar batteries, it attracts numerous players to the industry, which leads to intense competition. To gain a competitive edge, manufacturers and suppliers are under pressure to offer more cost-effective solutions.

Government policies and incentives

A lot of states and territories offer financial incentives, rebates, and FiTs to encourage the adoption of renewable energy technologies. As these policies persist and evolve, they can significantly reduce the upfront costs of installing solar batteries.

Energy storage research

Research institutions and universities in Australia, and across the world, actively study energy storage technologies. Their findings can lead to breakthroughs that make solar batteries more cost-effective.

Consumer demand

As more Aussies recognise the benefits of solar batteries, demand is likely to increase further. Higher demand can stimulate innovation, drive competition, and lead to cost reductions as manufacturers strive to meet the needs of the market.

Whilst the cost of solar batteries has been steadily increasing in recent years, predicting an exact timeline for when they will become highly affordable is challenging. However, the consensus among experts is that prices will continue to drop over the coming years, making solar batteries increasingly accessible to a broader range of consumers.

Therefore, individuals who want to pursue solar batteries should keep a close eye on market developments, government incentives, and technological advancements.

Emerging technologies in the field of solar batteries

One of the emerging technologies today in energy storage is the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence. These technologies can improve the performance of solar batteries by optimising, managing, and forecasting.

Hybrid energy storage systems are also emerging. This type of system mixes various technologies, such as thermal storage and batteries.

The potential for off-grid solar systems to revolutionise the affordability of solar batteries

Off-grid solar systems deliver an independent and self-sustaining source of electricity for homes. They consist of solar panels, batteries and inverters that allow homeowners to generate and store energy without relying on the grid. This autonomy from the grid is a game-changer for affordability.

Excess energy is stored in batteries for later use with off-grid systems that maximise self-consumption, ensuring that homeowners use as much of the energy generated by their solar panels as possible.

In many parts of the country, solar panels owners benefit from FiTs. However, they are typically lower than retail electricity rates. With off-grid systems, will let residents reduce their reliance on FiTs by using stored energy during peak demand times when grid electricity is most expensive.

Off-grid systems also prioritise battery storage, and as the demand for solar batteries increases, economies of scale come into play. As more homes adopt off-grid systems, the production of solar batteries is likely to increase, leading to lower costs per unit.

Whilst off-grid systems may need a higher upfront investment compared to grid-tied systems, their long-term affordability benefits are appealing. This revolution in energy indolence offers a promising path for households in Australia to embrace renewable energy and reduce reliance on costly grid electricity.

It’s evident that the future holds great promise for the affordability of solar batteries in Australia. As advancements continue, we can anticipate further drops in costs, enhanced efficiency and increased accessibility for homeowners and businesses alike.

The renewable energy industry is abuzz with news that the Tesla Powerwall 3 is not only in the works but has been installed on a few properties in the USA!

Little has been known about the Powerwall 3, the next generation of the Tesla Powerwall battery series. Industry insiders have been scrambling for details for months, but news of the recent installs has confirmed many rumours and put to rest wild theories and expectations.

What do we know about the Tesla Powerwall 3?

The Tesla Powerwall 2 has been a top seller since its inception in 2016. Featuring 13.5kWh of storage capacity, the home battery has been a favourite for its features and name. The Tesla Powerwall 3 is expected to be much the same as its predecessor, though with improvements to its maximum power output. The company’s CEO, Elon Musk, re-shared on X (formerly Twitter) the recent installations on 3 homes. He also confirmed that the Powerwall 3 will be optimised for ‘ease of installation and high power’.

Shared on the Tesla Motor Club were some details from the installation, including photos taken of the unit itself and the specifications.

What we know:

Battery Storage Capacity (kWh) Battery Type Max Output (kW) Dimensions Weight
Powerwall 2 13.5kWh Lithium Ion 5.8 – 7.6 (peak) 115 cm × 75 cm × 14 cm 114 kg
Powerwall 3 13.5kWh Prismatic Lithium Ion Phosphate 11.55 – 15.4* (peak) 109 cm × 61 cm × 18 cm 130 kg
Information is correct as of 8 September 2023. *Source: NRG Clean Power

On the surface, there does not seem to be too many differences between the Powerwall 2 and 3. However, the maximum continuous output increase to 11.55kW (currently 5.8kW continuous or 7kW peak for the Powerwall 2) would be a game changer for the battery. This would mean that, in the event of power loss to the home, the battery would be able to provide more continuous power and run more appliances.

It can also be assumed, though not confirmed, that the battery will also serve as an inverter. If confirmed, this would be incredible news for homes looking to purchase a new solar system. A separate inverter would not be necessary, which would cut down on the overall cost of the system (battery + solar). We assume that this will be the case as the pictured installation of the Powerwall 3 shows that the unit includes a rapid shutdown for PV, which is a feature designed for inverters and not batteries.

What we don’t know:

While the recent news has given us some insight into what we can expect from the Powerwall 3, there are still many details that we are uncertain about:

  • Whether the pictured Powerwall 3 will be available in Australia or there will be a variant
  • When the Powerwall 3 will be available for Australians
  • Whether the battery will have inverter integration
  • The cost of the system
  • Warranty period

For the time being, we will need to look across to the USA for news on the Tesla Powerwall 3. However, the recent discounts offered by Tesla for the Powerwall 2 would indicate that the production of the unit will be tapered for the release of the Powerwall 3. Like all things Tesla, we can expect an upcoming unveiling that will deliver all the information we need.

Why a solar battery should be on your agenda

If you already have a solar system, solar battery storage is the next step in energy independence. While batteries are usually a very expensive addition to a home, the benefits can be viewed as an investment. Finding out that your street is experiencing a blackout will likely be from a chat with your neighbour as your battery will seamlessly provide you power when your street has gone dark. Storing all the excess energy your solar produces will make use of the sun long after it has set.

How a solar battery works

Solar batteries, also known as solar energy storage systems or solar battery storage, are devices designed to store excess energy generated by solar panels during periods of high sunlight. This stored energy can be utilised during cloudy days, nighttime, or when energy consumption exceeds the solar panel’s immediate output. Solar batteries bridge the gap between energy generation and consumption, enabling homeowners and businesses to optimise their solar investments.

solar battery storage
  1. Solar panels generate electricity during the day.
  2. The solar inverter converts the electricity into DC (direct current).
  3. The DC electricity is then stored in the solar battery.
  4. At night, or when the solar panels are not generating enough electricity, the battery can provide AC (alternating current) electricity to your home.
  5. The battery inverter converts the DC electricity from the battery into AC electricity that your appliances can use.

AC versus DC coupling

AC coupling and DC coupling are two different ways of connecting solar panels to batteries. In an AC-coupled system, the solar panels are connected to an inverter, which converts the DC power from the panels to AC power that the home or business can use. The inverter also charges the batteries. The solar panels are connected directly to the batteries in a DC-coupled system. A charge controller is used to regulate the flow of power between the panels and the batteries.

AC-coupled systems are generally easier to install than DC-coupled systems. They are also more common in Australia, as they are compatible with the grid-tied solar system. However, AC-coupled systems are less efficient than DC-coupled systems, as they lose some power during the conversion from DC to AC.

DC-coupled systems are more efficient than AC-coupled ones but are more complex to install. They are incompatible with the grid-tied solar system, so they are only suitable for off-grid systems.

So why install a solar battery storage?

Consider a household consuming 20 kWh of electricity per day. With a 10 kWh solar battery, the household can store excess solar energy generated during the day for consumption at night or during power outages. This can significantly reduce reliance on the grid, potentially slashing electricity bills by up to 80%.

Businesses can also reap substantial benefits from solar batteries. A commercial establishment with a 50 kWh battery can store excess solar energy to power operations during peak demand hours, reducing reliance on expensive grid electricity. This can lead to significant cost savings, improved energy efficiency, and enhanced environmental sustainability.
